So there's this one person extremely precious to me. We've shared much of our lives together. I'll call her Peaches. Peaches and I got to talking one day. She was telling me about this book called "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle which happened to be a best-seller. It's one of those self-empowerment types.
She's a level-headed person; capable of much insanity oh yes.. but never loses control. From what she told me, the book teaches you how to be at peace with yourself and the past, and to achieve enlightenment.
"But I don't wanna be that way," she said, "I don't wanna be detached. It's like he's saying that you shouldn't feel anything; there's no passion at all. No emotion. Nothing affects or changes you."
Those may not have been her exact words but you get the gist.
I completely understood what she meant. "It's only when you're passionate about something, when you care deeply enough, that you're vulnerable to hurt," I said. She nods. "The past deserves some credit for who you've become. It's what's moulded you and taught you invaluable lessons. You wouldn't be you without the hurt and the pain, the failures and heartbreaks," I told her, "and when you finally get what you've desperately yearned and struggled for, the joy is close to unmatchable. Otherwise, it's just an empty existence." She didn't hesitate to agree; gleaming with glee as if she'd received an assurance of sorts. I smiled and looked on as she made coffee for two. I love her coffee. So strong... rich and sweet just like her. May the world never change her.
